NVMe or PCI bus based storage devices are not new. They are in the consumer market for over 5/6 years from now on. All the big shots Intel, Micron, Hynix and Samsung are nowadays making blazing-fast NVMe storage devices and they are considerably cheap with noticeable performance enhancing capabilities.

SSD drives are old talk now. They are basically flash memory-based solid drives using SATA interface as data transmission. They are much faster than HDD ( hard disk drives) which are built with magnetic moving parts. We have to keep in mind SATA interface is limited to theoretical 6gbps bandwidth. So the speed will be at a fixed level and we are far beyond than that now.

PCI based or NVMe storage are capable of tremendously fast speed. A PCI version 3.0 x4 drive is capable of providing 32gbps of transmission speed and new PCI express 4.0 is launching very soon that May double the speed from the current generation.

Samsung is the current king in making blazing fast memory chip, whether it is RAM, Storage devices or any other memory-related devices. Their 960 Evo and 960pro NVMe drive dominated the market for years and no other brand could come as close of those. Nowadays many are providing competitive storage solution in the NVMe PCI architecture such as Micron. But the launch of 970evo, 970pro and 970 QLC  version gave Samsung the upper hand in the storage market.

It is better to have a single NVMe drive in PC as a boot drive and another SATA SSD as a general disk drive for Mass storage. Hard disk drives era is already over as the price of SSD drives and NVMe is ever decreasing and they are significantly fast and shows real-time performance improvement in computing.
