President M Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina today expressed deep shock and sorrow at the death of Dr. Zafrullah Chowdhury, the founder of Gonoshasthaya Kendra.

In a condolence message, the Head of State prayed for eternal peace of his departed soul and conveyed profound sympathy to the bereaved family.

In another message, the prime minister expressed her condolences and acknowledged Dr. Zafrullah’s significant contributions to the pharmaceutical industry, public health sector, and the great liberation war, stating that his legacy will always be remembered. Dr Zafrullah breathed his last at 11:35 PM on Tuesday at Gonoshasthaya Nagar Hospital, where he was undergoing treatment. He was 81. Inna Lillahi Wa Inna Ilahi Raziun!

A leading civil society figure and a vascular surgeon by background, Chowdhury was suffering due to kidney ailment for long alongside liver problems and Septicemia since he was infected with COVID-19. The body of valiant Freedom Fighter and founder of Gonoshasthaya Kendra Dr Zafrullah Chowdhury will be taken at the Central Shaheed Minar in the city tomorrow (Thursday) morning as the people from all strata can pay their last respect.

The body will be kept there from 10am to 1pm, Gonoshasthaya Kendra Trustee Board chairman Alfatun Nesa told a press briefing at Gonoshasthaya Nagar Hospital here.

The valiant freedom fighter will be given guard of honour at the Shaheed Minar, she said, adding, later his body will be taken to Suhrawardy Udyan where his first Namaz-e-Janaza will be held.

The second Nama-e-Janaza will be held at Gonoshasthaya Kendra in Savar on Friday after Jumma prayers. Aleya Chowdhury, younger sister of Dr Zafrullah, was present in the press briefing.

Dr Zafrullah breathed his last at Gonoshasthaya Nagar Hospital on Tuesday night. He left behind his wife, a son and a daughter and well-wishers to mourn his death. (Source: BSS)
