On Sunday, nine individuals who were residents in the Kazipur area have been sentenced to the death penalty by Additional District and Sessions Judge Ripati Kumar Biswas for the murder of two brothers in 2012 in the frontier Kazipur village under Gangni Upazila of Meherpur. The convicted individuals include Abdul Halim, Atiar Rahman, Jalal Uddin, Shariful Islam, Sharif Hossain, Dobir Uddin, Farid Hossain (Dobir Uddin’s son), Azizul Haque, and Monirul Islam Moni.

The prosecution claims that on the night of June 15, 2012, the convicted individuals contacted Abujel, aged 35, and his brother Rafiqul Islam, aged 40, via mobile phone and viciously murdered them in a crop field at the village, allegedly due to their involvement in phensidyl smuggling. After the murder, Jorina Begum, the sister of the victims, filed a case with Gangni Thana. The police subsequently filed the charge sheet.

Based on the testimony of witnesses and evidence presented in court, the verdict was issued. According to Additional Public Prosecutor Kazi Shahidul Haque, the court acquitted five individuals. In addition, the court imposed a fine of Tk 20,000 on each convicted person, and if they fail to pay, they will be required to serve an additional six months in jail. (Source: BSS)
