The Water Resources Ministry today said the gates of Farakka Barrage remain open from July to October every year as part of the regular management. “Different media today reported that Farakka Barrage gates have been opened by India causing possibility of flood (in Bangladesh). But the fact is that gates of Farakka Barrage are kept open from July to October every year as part of the regular management,” the ministry said in a press release.

It said the water level is increasing again in both sides of Ganga/Padma basin due to heavy downpour triggered by depression in the last few days, causing possibility of flooding in upstream and downstream areas in India and Bangladesh.

Local administrations, officials and employees of Water Development Board and district water resources management committees have been kept alert to face any flood situation. Preparations have been taken to face flood situation and river erosion in the districts on Padma river basin and all other districts, it said
