Today is Pahela Boishakh, the first day of Bangla New Year, 1425. The whole country wore a festive look today. People from all walks of life, irrespective of their ethnic identity or religious beliefs, celebrated the day with traditional festivities.

People wake up early in the morning, had bath and put on their traditional attires. Women wore white saris with red borders and adorned themselves with colourful churis and flowers, while men dressed themselves with pajamas and punjabis. Today all people loved to have traditional food named Pantha Ilish.

The most colourful event was held in Dhaka today. Early in the morning, people in hundreds and thousands poured in from all directions at Ramna Batamul organised by Chhyanata, a leading cultural organisation. The cultural programmes commenced just with sunrise and the renowned artists of the country participated the program that started with the famous Tagore – song Esho – he – Boishakh, Esho Esho. Artists also sang tradotional folk songs, and displayed classical dances with the rhythm of musical instruments.

People also came to join the colourful processions, the biggest carnival of the country, organised by the Fine Arts students of Dhaka University. The procession displayed the traditional practices of Bangalee culture. The masks and wreaths worn by the people were so fascinating. They simbolised contemporary worries or happiness in our national life. The procession attracted a good number of foreign tourist as well, who were really enjoying Bangali culture.

Different social and cultural organisations and educational institutions of the country celebrated the day with their own cultural programmes. Newspapers brought out special supplements. There were also special programmes on the radio and television channels.

The celebration of Pahela Boishakh marks a day of cultural unity for the whole nation irrespective of caste and creed. The day inspires people to start life with renewed hopes and inspirations.
